—— 网友已经意识到they were away 是 the length of time 的定语从句，非常不错。只不过在描述上，不够准确。应如此说：在the length of time 之后省略了“关系副词”that，关系副词that 等于when 之意（意为：在这短期内），定语从句they were away 是主系表结构（主语 + 系动词 + 副词），所以关系副词that 没有、也没办法作形容词宾语的问题，再说，away 更不是形容词，而且形容词之后也不可以直接跟宾语，只不过后话。
